I read every business book that, you know, makes the New York Times top 10 bestseller list. I looked down at this thing and I was stunned. You guys have to lead them verbally on the field. And so Im thinking, well, Im going to correct that this year. Ive never developed a leader. And as a woman you can understand the huge perils of deconstructing a womans confidence. And people are thinking about how do I find workers, get them onboarded, develop them, keep them, get them performing. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. This stuff is recorded. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. And weve made all kinds of mistakes on this because originally we would actually share where they ranked among the 30 players in character, and that, you know, I didnt think ended up being very positive. Anson: And if the kid treated the parents poorly he wouldnt offer them a scholarship because obviously if the kid doesnt treat the parents poorly the kids not going to treat him well or his culture well. And all of a sudden, at the end of the practice, the assistant managers with their clipboards sprint to the scores table, and there at the scores table is the head manager, and hes grabbing this stuff from all of his associates. Of course were all excited by huge talent and so the temptation is always to recruit talent. Well, thank you so much for taking time today. In 1999, I was invited to lecture on athletic excellence in a freshman honors seminar on campus. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I read reams of business books. He assembles all of us in a room, all of the Ph.D. candidates and masters candidates and says, Okay, I want all of you people to memorize reams of Russian poetry and Russian literature. And now these students are looking at each other and they cant believe it. Melissa: So how do you identify culture fit for your organization right now? So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. This kid is now there with his parents and hes got all Fs on his report card. Anson: Well, to transfer you let them know thatand usually a person that wants, the person thats really below the line is someone that isnt playing much, usually, and so as a result, you know, behind your back theyre whining about everything under the sun, which, by the way, goes completely counter to our first core value, which is we dont whine. Thats awesome. They do not want to excel. But Im going to, you know, Im going to conform to the B.S. And I absolutely loved everything in his book. Below are some of the insights Dorrance shared during our chat, edited for length and clarity. Because we recruit extraordinary talent. And we develop such an incredible mentality. Your function is the bottom line. And most of what we do in our environment is construct confidence. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. And so I really appreciated that. And when they dont sign a pro contract its not because I havent told them the areas where they have fallen. And then once they do, once they start to finish high, once they start to play, they understand that everythings in their full control, including winning and losing matches at the highest possible level. Shes telling me the story in the New York Times, and I am captivated by it. Anson: Then I dont have to prepareyeah, I dont want to prepare a speech. And at the end of his address, he turns around. And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. Theres no cookie-cutter route to creating the people you want. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. They leave to shower immediately. Anson: We have to do it, yeah, cause, you know, it destroys everything, you know, teams, companies. Just give me the tools. What I consider most valuable about objective review is theres no subjectivity. First of all, what everyone has to embrace is that everyone is different. And so almost everything we present is done in ranking form. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. She called me up one day. Many of the values are drawn from books on leadership, and they are illustrated by a diverse set of symbols and quotations. Whats my job? And yeah, there were a lot of things she didnt do to get on the field for me. [Driving] all of us freaking, you know, batshit crazy, just keep quiet. Anson: Yes. Ive learned the lesson that some people just dont want to be in my culture. And by the way, I have a leadership class that meets once a week all off season for 1/2 hour called my leadership council, and its my leadership training platform. So the review we have with them after weve looked at all the data is we want to rank them, and they rank themselves in these categories: self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability. But the thing I learned most from him was how he would calmly sit there and listen to, you know, aggressive self-righteousness and not indict the person with his self-righteous opinion.
